The tamarind tree, which is native to Africa but also grows in other tropical regions, including India, produces the tropical fruit known as tamarind. The pods of the tamarind tree look like beans and contain seeds as well as a fibrous pulp. The pulp of these pods becomes paste-like and has a sweet-sour flavor as it ripens.
